Scotch 7/23/06 - 8/27/16 A sad today in our home as we said good bye to Scotch. He fought hard for a year against Hemangiosarcoma which is a rapidly growing, highly invasive variety of cancer, occurring almost exclusively in dogs. Scotch made us laugh everyday - many times! D's Firefly aka "Patches" August 18,1998 - July 15, 2014 Our dear Patches (the Kansas cutie) arrived Feb. 2007 and crossed the Rainbow Bridge July 15,2014. We called her Mother Greyhound because she had 29 puppies. When she was at GAO, Linda would say “ Herbie would you please walk Patches?” and Patches would walk so nicely but sniff everything! In 17 inches of snow, her head went down and she came up with a ripe strawberry. She loved everyone she met. She had no fear of anything. When she got old and frail, her strong heart and her strong spirit carried her through. The only time Patches barked was to initiate play. She was into interior decorating with pillows, rugs, couch covers topping it all with newspapers. She had the prettiest eyes, a dalmation marked ear, and a patch over her left eye like Pete in “the little Rascals”. She should have been a model! Patches always greeted us at the door. She cried when her beloved Matt died, but welcomed her nephew Oliver [Coors for the Win] with wagging tail and a smile. We gave her our hearts when she came. She took our hearts when she left. (CRS PORKCHOP) 12/9/06-4/6/19 Our beautiful sweet boy Porkchop crossed the Rainbow bridge. You were loving, affectionate and goofy little boy. You were a Mother’s Day gift for me after we lost our first greyhound Charlie suddenly. I knew from the moment you licked my face at the shelter that you had found your forever home! You were so excited to have a big yard to run in, toys to play with and of course lounging on your favorite chair in the corner of the living room which no one else ever had the chance to use once you discovered it. You quickly learned the ropes from your greyhound buddies Finnigan and Carly and your non greyhound friend Abby and you all became fast friends! There were many mornings that we would wake up to all of them howling at sirens and barking at strangers walking by the window. I loved watching all of them chasing each other through the yard while Abby supervised your laps on the sideline. Even though I am heartbroken you are gone, it brings me great comfort to know that you reunited once again and that you can all run and play. We love you our Porky man and you will forever be in our hearts! Love, The D’Alessandros
Geeza (Cragie Mo Geeza) 08/18/2002-10/21/2014 Geeza came to us as a foster in 2006, little did we know he would change our lives forever. Not only was he was he a great pet he became a huge part of our family. Anybody that had the privilege to know him knew what kind of wonderful dog he was, those that didn't know him missed out a lot. Smithys Iron AKA Smitty 08/19/2013 - 10/22/2020 I still remember our drive home when we picked you up and you ripped the most heinous farts we've ever smelled. Greyhound farts are no joke. Teaching you how to do the stairs was quite a task. I remember leaving you for the day to go to work and you'd be crying so loud that I don't know the neighbors never called the cops on us. Taking you to the I-X center for the Christmas Connection or Home & Garden show so you could get some pets from random people. Taking you to the beach for the first time and you finally went in the lake after your sister tried to swim away. You stealing a corn cob from someone's plate and gulping it down. Or when you, yet again, stole someone's corn at thanksgiving. We've had some great memories over the years. I will miss all the ripped/dead toys that you loved to take into the backyard (the toy graveyard). I will miss waking up in the morning, realizing that I'm cuddling you and that you sneaked into the bed between your mom and I to sleep with us. I will miss all your rooing, especially when we read Adleys "Doggies" book. I will miss your goofy self hanging out the window on our car drives even when it’s snowing outside. I will miss every single piece of clothing having white dog hairs on it. But most of all, I will miss you. We love you and we will always love you. Your mom and I will see you at the bridge. Greyhound Adoption of Ohio is a nonprofit organization that has been dedicated to placing retired racing greyhounds in loving homes since 1992. To date we have placed more than 3,000 dogs into homes where they have become members of the family.

Our Mission Statement

Greyhound Adoption of Ohio was established in 1992 to find homes for retired racing greyhounds. Since our inception, we have placed more than 3,000 greyhounds in loving homes.

Upon arrival at GAO, each dog is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, heartworm-tested, receives a thorough dental cleaning, has a microchip implanted for permanent identification and has any other medical care he or she might need. Each dog is then evaluated to determine what type of home will be best for placement. Some of the factors considered include the activity level of each dog and family, whether there are children or other pets in the home, how long the family is away on a daily basis, and whether the family has a history of responsible pet ownership. We strive to ensure these gentle creatures are placed in homes where they will live safe and secure and be loved for the rest of their lives.

We believe that adoption is but a “band-aid” on a very large wound. There can never be enough homes for all the dogs in need. With an estimated 10-15 million unwanted animals abandoned or destroyed each year in this country, our goal, in addition to finding loving homes for these kind and gentle creatures, is to make the public aware of the enormity of the pet overpopulation problem and to encourage spaying and neutering of all pets. Therefore, we do not place greyhounds in homes where there are unaltered pets.
